Trail Overview

This is an exceptional out-and-back trail that provides a very scenic and rewarding driving experience in the southern Toiyabe Range. The journey begins on the valley floor with a wide, flat, and fast road. However, as you transition into the mouth of the canyon, the landscape transforms. For several miles, you are flanked by massive, vertical rock formations that tower over the track, giving the canyon its appropriate name. As you climb higher, the narrow canyon walls give way to an expansive, rolling mountain meadow. The trail becomes twisty and engaging as it winds through this high-altitude landscape, offering numerous offshoot trails for further exploration. This area is a premier destination for campers; there are multiple large, level dispersed camping spots that offer a serene alpine atmosphere. The trail culminates at the historic Wall Canyon Mine, where travelers can find the weathered ruins and foundations of a significant mining operation. While technical obstacles are minimal, consisting only of a few mild washouts, the sheer beauty and variety of the terrain make this a must-drive route. The ruins at the end of the trail are fascinating but hazardous. The mine shafts are currently only protected by thin wire fencing; exercise extreme caution, keep a safe distance from all openings, and ensure children and pets are closely supervised. Expect no cell service once you enter the "walled" section of the canyon. The deep geological folds create a complete signal block. Download offline maps before leaving the Highway 376 corridor.

Difficulty

Suitable for most high-clearance vehicles and SUVs. The well-traveled and graded nature of the trail makes it accessible even for stock 4x4s, provided they have decent tires for the occasional rocky patch. The Trail does narrow significantly as you enter the forested and meadow sections. Be prepared to use turnouts if you encounter oncoming traffic.

History

Wall Canyon is named for its sheer geological features, but its history is defined by the search for antimony and silver. The Wall Canyon Mine was a notable producer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Unlike many mining camps that were abandoned almost immediately after the silver veins dried up, the antimony found here remained valuable for industrial use, keeping the canyon active longer than its neighbors.
