Trail Overview
Spanish Spring is a captivating mountain traverse that carries explorers through the heart of the southern Toquima Range. Starting from the wide-open basins off Belmont Road, the trail quickly gains elevation, leading you to the evocative Spanish Spring ruins. While only an outer rock wall and fallen timbers remain today, the site serves as a poignant reminder of the hardy souls who once guarded this rare water source. As the terrain shifts from sagebrush into the fragrant Utah Juniper belt, keep your eyes to the west for Elephant Rock, a striking natural formation that mimics an elephant's profile. The trail continues north through a series of scenic valleys and canyons, twisting through the high peaks and passing a catalog of historic mining sites, including the Jumbo Mine, Summit Hill, and Mayflower Gulch. The trail eventually descends directly into the historic town of Manhattan. Unlike many of Nevada's silent ghost towns, Manhattan is a "living town" with a resilient local population and a rich architectural heritage from its 20th-century gold boom. Expect zero cell service for the duration of this mountain run. The deep canyons and high peaks of the Toquima Range create a total signal shadow. History
The trail is a journey through Nevada's "Second Silver Age"; while most booms happened in the 1860s, the Manhattan Gold Rush began in 1905 after silver was discovered in a nearby canyon. The Jumbo Mine and Mayflower Gulch represent the incredible labor of thousands of prospectors who flooded this area, turning a quiet pinyon forest into a bustling industrial center that once rivaled Tonopah in its ambition.
