Trail Overview

Middle Carp Elgin is a short cutover trail that invites exploration while showcasing the historical significance of the Old Spanish Trail (Spanish: Viejo Sendero Espanol). This historical trade route connected the northern New Mexico settlements, particularly near Santa Fe, with those in Los Angeles and southern California. Spanning approximately 700 miles (1,100 km), the trail traversed high mountains, arid deserts, and deep canyons, making it one of the most arduous trade routes established in the United States. Explored in part by Spanish explorers in the late 16th century, traders extensively utilized the trail with pack trains from about 1830 until the mid-1850s. Notably, the area was part of Mexico from its independence in 1821 until the Mexican Cession to the United States in 1848. As you traverse this rugged route, watch for the old Spanish trail markers that provide insight into this rich history and the paths that early travelers once used. This trail cuts across the upper side of the mesa, featuring a mix of sandy and rocky terrain, with sections that include boulders, adding to the adventure. Be cautious of creosote bushes lining the path, as they can easily scratch your vehicle's paint if you stray too close. At the eastern end of the trail, be sure to look for the remnants of the Old Spanish Trail route, which descends the side of the cliff--a fascinating sight that deepens your connection to the area's historical narrative. Important Note: While navigating Middle Carp Elgin, ensure you're adequately prepared for desert conditions by bringing enough water and supplies. Watch for the Desert tortoise in the area. Download your offline maps beforehand, as cell service can be unreliable in remote areas.
