Trail Overview
This designated ATV (vehicles less than or equal to 50" in width) is part of the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Historical Park. The trail twists and turns through a dense stand of juniper and pine trees, with many short ascents and descents. The western limb of this trail traverses some steeper terrain and has a couple of narrow side hill cuts. This trail can be a tight fit, even for ATVs. The exit point of this trail onto the Willow Creek Road is obscured and can be difficult. All things considered, this is a pleasant experience.

Difficulty
There are no technically challenging requirements for riding this trail. It is very narrow with lots of tight turns and fun.
History
The charcoal ovens themselves are amazing structures, constructed during the heyday of mining activity in the Ward District and used to produce charcoal required for the smelting of ore from the area mines. Supplying these ovens with wood virtually denuded the surrounding hills around the turn of the century. Producing charcoal from the trees was a very specialized skill back in the day.
