Broad Canyon - FS 44212

Trail Overview

This is a visually stunning but physically demanding trail that transitions from the sun-bleached sagebrush flats near Kingston into a lush, green corridor hidden within the foothills. The journey is obstacle-rich, with a trail surface that is a constant mix of jagged rocks, soft sand, and erosion-carved gullies. As you ascend, the typical desert flora gives way to dense willow thickets and mountain scrub surrounding the creek, providing excellent cover for the local Sage Grouse population. The driving is technical and requires a focused eye for line selection. The trail is defined by numerous off-camber sections, large boulder gardens, and deep, articulating ruts caused by the creek's powerful seasonal flows. This is a true "end-of-the-road" adventure. The motorized track terminates abruptly at a massive, impassable washout where the creek has completely reclaimed the canyon floor. This final obstacle has dug out the trail to an extreme degree and is heavily overgrown, making it impassable for any standard off-road vehicle. Signal is extremely spotty and "comes and goes" depending on your position within the canyon folds. Download offline maps before leaving the town of Kingston or Highway 376.

Difficulty

Rated a 4 due to the combination of large rocky obstacles, sustained off-camber tilts, and significant erosion. High clearance and excellent suspension articulation are essential for navigating the "boulder-heavy" sections and deep ruts. The trail ends at a massive washout that is effectively impassable for full-size vehicles.
