Trail Overview

Rattlesnake Trail starts off the Two Bear Trail and is an out-and-back. This trail is a narrow, double-track trail that will be tight for a full-width vehicle. An SxS might be a more comfortable vehicle for this trail. This is an overall consistent trail, where what you get at the beginning is pretty much what you get the entire way. There is quite a bit of overgrowth from bushes and tree branches in spots along this trail. A full-width vehicle will likely see some light clear coat damage. The surface of this trail is mostly a smooth sand/ fine gravel surface. Occasionally, there are some short sections of loose, jagged rock, but nothing bigger in diameter than 8". This trail does have a fair amount of light off-camber sections and a few potholes here and there. Overall, there isn't much of a climb or descent on this trail except for the very last part of the trail, where there is a decent hill to go down. However, it is very short. Along the way, you will find some great views of the Bitterroot Mountains, ranging from Darby, MT to Missoula, MT. You can also catch a good glimpse of the valley near Hamilton, Montana. The trail comes to a dead end at a gate that borders a section of state land. Here you will have to turn around and head out the way you came in. As the name implies, this is a popular area to find rattlesnakes, so be aware. This trail is open June 16 - October 14.
