Trail Overview

Ebb Spring (FS 4100) is a natural terrain forest service road within the Mark Twain National Forest, Doniphan / Eleven Point Unit. Ebb Spring is a short adventure starting from the north shoulder of US Route 60 heading north into the woods, passing the spur with a gate on the right at the entry, to continue riding the ridge top on the left, over a generally flat track, yet finding it's thrill in crossing fallen trees, large mounds of natural terrain, overgrown foliage, and finding a way northward over a path that seems to be a forgotten or at least barely maintained. The modern end of the track is marked by a rusty metal gas can, with the former path north of it being choked out by new tree growth, slowly claiming back the area. Ebb Spring is a fun detour to practice crossing downed trees, perhaps some small winch work with smaller rigs over said trees, but there is no spring or water in sight.

Difficulty

Ebb Spring is given a 3/10 rating for being a natural dirt terrain path, with small 6-inch to medium 12-inch thick downed trees, amongst large mounds and soft, loose terrain to traverse over, and potential surface mud. Difficulty can increase due to heavy use and lack of maintenance, larger 12-inch-plus fallen trees on the trail, wet or rainy conditions, or inclement weather. The road could also drop in difficulty if it were to have a gravel surface throughout, and to address the fallen trees.

History

Before the completion of the continuous 4-lane US Route 60 between Willow Springs and Van Burne in July of 2010, US-60 was a more simplistic two-lane highway, and Ebb Spring used to start 2000 feet further to the south-southeast, on the north side of what is now the eastbound lanes of the modern divided highway, just across the road from Fremont Fire Tower. On the satellite view map, the former pathway of the road is still visible despite being abandoned for over 15 years. Documented in 2/2026 by Christopher Menz
