Trail Overview

This trail is best tackled from the top down, especially after recent rainfall, as the steep hill climb can become extremely slick and unpredictable. The entire route follows a steep grade composed mostly of loose rock and gravel, which can make traction difficult on both ascents and descents. The trail features a series of tight, switchback-style turns that require careful maneuvering. Drivers should pay close attention on these corners--if you miss your line, it's possible to drop a tire off a ledge, which could result in a rollover. Although the trail doesn't include traditional rock crawling or major obstacles, the combination of steep elevation, unstable terrain, and sharp turns makes this a route that requires full concentration and vehicle control. Proper tires, low-range gearing, and confident driving are highly recommended.

Difficulty

This is a steep, loose hill with tight switchbacks that demand precision driving. After rain, traction drops and rollover risk increases if you miss a line, especially on the corners. There are no major obstacles, but the terrain and angles make it challenging.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
