Williams Road

Trail Overview

This trail is a wide and well-maintained gravel route that remains mostly flat and smooth, although it includes several winding sections with gentle ascents and descents. Drivers should adjust their speed to match the terrain, especially around curves and in areas with elevation changes. The trail passes through a densely forested area and offers a quiet, scenic drive with few, if any, side trails branching off into the woods. A small bridge provides a crossing partway along the route, and the trail eventually connects with Sherwood Anderson Road. In June, the roadside is dotted with wildflowers, adding a splash of color to the otherwise green surroundings. While the drive is pleasant, there are no established or dispersed camping options along the trail. Visitors should also be aware that the area lacks basic facilities, including potable water and trash disposal. Cell phone coverage may be unreliable or unavailable, so it's best to plan ahead accordingly.

History

Superior National Forest was established in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the region's watersheds and natural resources after years of heavy logging and mining. The area has long been home to the Ojibwe people, who continue to maintain cultural ties to the land. In 1978, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness within the forest was given added protection, making it one of the most visited wilderness areas in the U.S. today.
