Murphy Lake

Trail Overview

This trail begins at a cleared logging site where the ground is wide and uneven due to the deep ruts left by heavy machinery. As the trail enters the forest, the surface smooths out somewhat but becomes increasingly overgrown. The further you travel, the more rugged, bumpy, and narrow it gets, with a series of hills adding to the challenge. The second half of the trail, which descends toward a river, requires a high-clearance, off-road-capable vehicle. Fire damage is visible along much of the route, with scorched trees and underbrush serving as reminders of past burns. Toward the end, a sign marks a private drive with instructions to keep out, but just before that, a rough path leads down to the river where there is space to turn around and, potentially, set up camp. Wildlife is active here, and rabbits in particular seem unbothered by human presence. While there are no formal campgrounds, dispersed camping is generally permitted in the Superior National Forest outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness; however, it's best to confirm with local authorities before setting up camp. The trail has no amenities--there are no restrooms, trash facilities, or water sources--and cell reception may be spotty or nonexistent. Those planning to camp should be prepared and practice Leave No Trace principles.
