Trail Overview

This trail is a milder rock garden compared to others in the area, making it a solid choice for those looking to challenge themselves without committing to extreme terrain. The base is primarily dirt, which can become slick and reduce traction after recent rainfall, especially when paired with the scattered rock features. Some of the embedded rocks along the trail reach up to 2 feet in height, requiring careful tire placement and decent ground clearance. Fortunately, there are alternate lines available that allow drivers to bypass the most difficult obstacles if desired. While it's not the most intense trail, it still demands attention and smart decision-making, especially in wet conditions.

Difficulty

While this isn't the most extreme rock garden in the area, it still features scattered rocks up to two feet tall that require careful navigation. The dirt base becomes slick when wet, making traction more difficult. Optional bypasses are available for those looking to avoid tougher obstacles, but drivers should still have decent clearance and be comfortable with off-camber terrain.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
