Franti Road

Trail Overview

This trail is a wide, well-graded gravel road that runs mostly straight with gentle ascents and descents as it passes through a forested landscape. There are a few residences along the route, so it's important to be mindful of local traffic. In June, one section of the trail tends to flood, with water covering the road surface, so this stretch should be approached with caution, particularly for lower-clearance vehicles. The surrounding area is scenic, especially in early summer when wildflowers are in full bloom and the forest feels vibrant. Despite the pleasant setting, the trail does not offer any formal or dispersed camping opportunities. Visitors should also be aware that there are no services along the route--no access to water, trash disposal, or restroom facilities. Cell service may be unreliable or unavailable depending on your exact location, so it's best to plan ahead and navigate with offline maps if needed.

This trail is well-maintained and regularly used by other OHV riders, road users, including residents in the area.

History

Superior National Forest was established in 1909 by President Theodore Roosevelt to protect the region's watersheds and natural resources after years of heavy logging and mining. The area has long been home to the Ojibwe people, who continue to maintain cultural ties to the land. In 1978, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness within the forest was given added protection, making it one of the most visited wilderness areas in the U.S. today.
