Trail Overview

This trail offers a solid mix of terrain and is a great option for drivers looking to experience a variety of features in one route. Scattered mud holes appear along the way, especially after recent rain, and can vary in depth, adding some unpredictability to the ride. Several steep hill climbs are spread throughout the trail, requiring steady throttle control and good traction. One of the more notable climbs includes a narrow shelf road section where careful line placement is crucial due to limited room for error. The trail gradually ascends to the Ely Lake Overlook, rewarding drivers with a scenic view that's perfect for a break or photo op. With a combination of mild technical challenges and beautiful forest surroundings, this trail offers a fun and engaging experience for intermediate level drivers.

Difficulty

This trail offers a moderate challenge with a good mix of terrain features. Mud holes and steep hill climbs are the main obstacles, requiring decent traction and driver awareness, especially after rain. One section includes a narrow shelf road along a climb, where precision becomes important due to the limited space and off camber tilt. It's not overly technical, but it's far from a casual cruise. Drivers with some experience will find it engaging without feeling overwhelmed.

History

The Iron Range OHV Recreation Area was built on reclaimed mining land, once part of the rich Mesabi Iron Range that fueled U.S. steel production for over a century. Today, this 1,200+ acre site blends industrial history with outdoor adventure, offering a rare chance to ride through the remnants of Minnesota's mining legacy.
