Crofton West Trail

Trail Overview

Crofton West Trail is an awesome trail within the Traverse City Forest Management Unit. Located just NW of Crofton near highway US-131, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the southern end of Boardman River Rd NW, you'll start in a less-trafficked portion of the trail that twists and turns right at the start. Shortly into the trail, the route turns into a grassy two-track that can get overgrown and is lush with vegetation through the woods. 0.5 miles into the route, you'll encounter a large open field that is accessible to dispersed camping. If you plan on utilizing this spot that's right off the trail, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY, and seek more information at the local DNR Office/Ranger Station before camping here. We want future generations to be able to enjoy these public spaces. Shortly after the open field, you'll zip back into the thick forest. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is only wide enough for 1 vehicle, with limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The north end of the trail finishes back at Boardman River Road Northwest. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's a fantastic route to explore with a lot of fun to be had!
