Trail Overview
Hughes Ridge Lookout (FS 662/FS 1342) is frequently gated at the 0.7-mile mark, but when open, it has much to offer the adventurous. At 2.0 miles, there is a fork to FS 662, which is 1.3 miles long and terminates at Hughes Meadow, and has undergone restoration work of returning the river to its original routing to restore Bull Trout habitat. There is a beautiful cedar grove and a defunct Forest Service building, which is open, but not suitable for a night's stay. If you return to the main route, there are several switchbacks along a rocky shelf road until you reach the terminus gate, where you can hike to Hughes Ridge lookout. It's a mild hike, roughly 1000 yards to the lookout. There are dispersed campsites beyond the terminus gate as well as at Hughes Meadows. The route is rarely used and can be overgrown, with deadfall across the road, and is subject to rock falls. There are no vault toilets or amenities, and no cell phone coverage. There are Skunk, Deer, Elk, Mountain Lion, and Bear in the vicinity. There can be seasonal closures of this and adjacent routes.
