Trail Overview
Bugle Pass or FR 655 and Hidden Lake FR 2545 of the Selkirk Mountains are the primary routes to trailheads for Hidden Lake, Shorty Peak, Red Top Mountain, and Joe Lake. This route is infrequently used, as evidenced by the significant deadfall on the roadway and an eroded roadbed that becomes more difficult as you ascend the route. Bring a saw and use a higher clearance vehicle to avoid undercarriage damage due to large rocks. Several pullouts from the route have been used for dispersed camping. There was a cattleguard on the route, though no sign of cattle was observed. The pine forest here is thick, and deer, turkey, elk, and grizzly bears are in the area. Be prepared and don't store food in your vehicle. There are no bathrooms or amenities, and no cell phone coverage.
