Trail Overview

BLM 128 connects Sagehen Flat Road down to River Bluff Road and offers a more engaging drive than some of the smoother connectors in the area. Starting from the Sagehen side, you'll immediately run into some deeper ruts and a bit of off-camber terrain that set the tone early. The trail stays one vehicle wide for most of the route, though there are a few spots where you can squeeze past oncoming traffic. It follows along hilltop ridges with mostly dirt surface and very few rocks, but the ruts--some reaching up to about 18 inches--can make you pick your line carefully, even though they're generally avoidable. As you work your way through, you'll encounter a couple of moderately steep climbs and descents along with a few sections of more noticeable off-camber. Around the halfway point (heading west), the trail forks--make sure to take the right, even if the left looks more traveled. This isn't a trail you'll be moving quickly on, but it keeps things interesting the whole way through. Also, keep an eye out for mountain bikers, as this trail crosses several MTB routes and runs right through a popular riding area.

Difficulty

This trail is rated at a three due to deeper ruts (up to 18 inches), multiple off-camber sections, and a few moderately steep climbs and descents. While the terrain is mostly dirt and not overly rocky, the narrow width and potential need for careful line choice add to the challenge.

Access Description

This trail is easy to find from either of the two main roads in this BLM area. On the River Bluff Road, you will find the 128 Trail about 2 miles up this road. This trail starts where the River Bluff Road starts to narrow down. If you are starting from the Sagehen Flat Road, you will find the trail about 2.5 miles up on the left side of the road. Here, the trail is not marked with a trail sign immediately, so it could be easy to pass.
