Trail Overview

R-1 provides access to unique high-altitude forests that have adapted to the cold and dry slopes of Mauna Kea and otherworldly, sprawling lava fields and cinder cones. When starting at the Kilohana hunter checking station, this dirt and gravel road goes uphill west of Ahumoa to the historic Pu`u La`au Ranger cabin, passing through open mamane, naio, and `iliahi native high-elevation dry forest. Native forest birds such as `amakihi and `elepaio are often sighted in the vicinity of the road. The route also traverses critical habitat of the endangered palila, a Hawaiian finch found only on the upper slopes of Mauna Kea.This is a long, moderately technical route that deserves high levels of respect for the landscape, it is a privilege to have public access to these lands. The mountain is a place of significant cultural and environmental value, please stay on trail and obey all rules and regulations which are clearly stated at the entry points, camping is not allowed. Make sure to check in and check out at the entry points, permits are only required for off highway vehicles. Start with a full tank, bring lots of water and food, and plan for an epic all-day adventure.

Difficulty

This track was recorded shortly after work was completed to repair washouts and sections of trail that had become very difficult to pass. Road maintenance and traffic is infrequent, expect conditions to vary throughout the year and a significantly higher difficulty after periods of rain. Large portions of this road are easy and relaxing, but there is a stretch on the northwestern side that is full of moderate features and increased difficulty. If attempting in a full size, long wheelbase, or non-lifted vehicle, careful line choice is necessary to avoid contact with the most difficult rock features, skidplates are highly recommended. The most difficult obstacles are chunky axle twisting short and steep climbs with large loose rocks that will challenge IFS vehicles without lockers. At the time of recording there was a short climb up a hill of fine sand, experience driving in sand is highly recommended. Be aware that large sections of this trail have little to no anchor points for winches. The trail is plenty wide to accommodate full size trucks and SUVs and was not overgrown.
