Trail Overview

This trail's access is directly from Hwy 50 across from the Blue Mesa Reservoir. The one-lane gravel road has frequent turnouts for passing vehicles. Initially, it runs along the Sapinero State Wildlife Area and then enters into the Gunnison National Forest. Along the way, you'll see occasional hoodoo outcroppings and Red Creek running beside the trailside. As you ascend into the forest, the tall spruce thickets are interspersed with aspen groves. Hiking trails are plentiful, as is dispersed camping. There are also well-marked side spurs for further exploration into the forest. The trail climbs to almost tree line and ends at the West Elk Wilderness. Seasonal closures are to be expected.
