Trail Overview
Porter Mountain is located on the east side of Grand Mesa, the largest mesa in the world. This ATV trail winds its way up the mountain and has a fantastic 270deg view of the surrounding area. The southern edge of the peak is a cliff, which leads to great prominence and exposure. Access to the trail can be through either the main trail (FS 534) or the cutoff (FS 535). Both of these trails have gates to restrict vehicle width to a maximum of 50 inches. This trail is a narrow two-track through aspen groves and open meadows the entire way up, with the summit being fairly rocky and open. It is not frequently traveled, but remains well-maintained. All sections of the trail are easy to navigate, and the minor technical sections bring some difficulty if you have a larger motorcycle or ATV. This trail requires a Colorado OHV permit, no matter your home OHV registration, as the state does not allow for out-of-state reciprocity.

Difficulty
This trail will be very easy for anyone on a capable dirt bike or ATV. There are some more rocky, steep sections towards the top (above the intersection with the cutoff trail) that could be challenging for a large motorcycle or ATV. Towards the top of the mountain, there are more consistent medium-sized rocks throughout the trail. The water crossing of Buzzard Creek along this main trail is deeper than would be accessed via the cutoff trail, but would only be a challenge if there is significant rain or snowmelt.
