Trail Overview

Starting from the staging area off Bean Ranch Road, BLM Route 87 starts as a wide dirt road, then peels off of the dirt road to the right at a trail sign for Route 87 for dirt bikes only. It's an easy single track through pinyon pine in a desert landscape full of mesas and sandstone rock. In the beginning, it's a narrow dirt trail with loose rock on the surface, and small slab rocks in the trail. You ride over a cool section of black dirt, and switch back left to drop into a narrow wash. The wash is sandy, lined with pinyon pine, with rock slabs and boulders in it. The trail stays in the wash for a while even when it crosses a dirt road and the unmotorized 86 trail a couple times. Stay in the wash even though it gets narrower with some tree branches sticking out, and it starts to have a couple rock obstacles. These obstacles are like small rock stair steps, but only of a 3 difficulty, and normally there are several lines to choose from in the wash. There are a couple big rock slab sections where you ride over the rock slab for several feet. Then it departs from the wash on the right and climbs up a hill. This appears to be an alternate option from the wash or a reroute from the GPS, but gets you out of the wash and onto a dirt single track again. It climbs up a steep hill with some loose rock on it and a small rock obstacle near the top of the climb. On top of the mesa it has some small rock slabs but nothing too difficult, and then it ends at an unmarked dirt road. From here you can explore several of the ATV trails in the area, which take you out to a great view of the Gunnison River. This is overall an easy trail and pretty scenic, and in an area where you might not see any other riders all day.
