Trail Overview

Aberdeen West makes a fun loop with Aberdeen East that is fairly easy, with lots of fast and flowy sections. The south ends starts off of Lower Aberdeen Road and heads north for 3.4 miles. It goes through wide open pretty barren terrain that is just sagebrush and rock piles that you can see in the distance. While most of it is very fast, there are lots of sections with embedded rock slabs and layers of rock across the trail. All of the rock is pretty flat and rideable though, none of it being big rock ledges or significant obstacles. It rides right next to some of the rock piles, but you don't have to climb over them. This is one of the longer trails in Hartman Rocks, but it's at the very southern end of the recreation area, so it takes a while to access it and is likely much less trafficked. This trail is closed March 15 - May 15 for sage grouse conservation.

Access Description

The Hartman Rocks Recreation Area, in Gunnison, Colorado, has about 50 miles of singletracks ranging from easy to advanced. It's a high-traffic area, and the trails are multi-use with mountain bikers and hikers. There is a large Day Use parking area at the entrance to Kill Hill Road, and there are 50 dry/primitive designated camping spots within the recreation area. There is a decent Verizon cell signal throughout the rec area. It can get pretty hot here in the summer. The trails are typically closed during the mud season to protect the routes as they dry out but are typically opened around May each year. Trails south of the Powerline Road are closed March 15 - May 15 for sage grouse conservation. The area is very well marked and maintained, with trail markers and difficulty levels indicated at the entrance to every trail.
