Trail Overview
Virgil Connell Loop Road, also known as Forest Service Road 32087, begins at the top of the grade off Highway 89, offering sweeping views of the Lake Topaz basin and surrounding mountain ranges. From the start, the trail parallels the highway before dropping into a wide-open valley flanked by rugged peaks and rolling high desert terrain. The trail surface is primarily dirt, but it's littered with embedded rocks, leading to slow-going, bumpy travel in several sections. You'll find scenic rock formations, occasional muddy stretches after rain (especially around Mile 1.5), and burnt tree sections that offer an eerie beauty and contrast against the vibrant valley views toward Highway 395. There are a few rocky or off-camber spots, including a notable descent into a forested area where 4WD and high clearance are recommended. Expect to navigate a handful of deep ruts where the trail crosses seasonal creeks or small washes. It ends at Big Spring Road. It is part of the Toiyabe National Forest. Be aware of the local fire restrictions that occur almost yearly.

Difficulty
The trail is manageable for most experienced riders, but high clearance and reliable all-terrain tires are strongly recommended. While 4WD isn't always required, it becomes useful in muddy conditions or on steeper rocky sections. Expect off-camber spots, rocky patches, and deep ruts at stream crossings. It's not technical, but careful driving is essential.
