Trail Overview

This rugged route is a mix of sand, pumice, and rocks. There are some narrow shelf roads. From the north side, the trail starts by winding through a pine forest lined with thick brush before breaking out onto a sandy, uneven shelf road at mile 1. Here you are rewarded with expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Shortly afterward, the trail reenters a pine forest before opening up into a large sagebrush-filled meadow around mile 2. By mile 3, the trail once again follows a shelf road with dramatic views over the valley and mountains. This section is off-camber with deep sand and requires careful driving. At mile 3.5, a steaming hot spring can be seen to the north, though it is too hot to soak. Looking south, the Mammoth-Yosemite Airport comes into view. If coming from the south, the trail is more demanding. The shelf road is narrow, rocky, and lined with brush that will leave Sierra pinstripes. At mile 1.1, volcanic fumaroles can be seen on the right side; they are extremely hot and worth extra caution.

Difficulty

The narrow shelf roads, off-camber sections, loose sand, and rocks make this a trail that requires high clearance and 4x4. Expect Sierra pinstripes from brush and the occasional rocky hump to go over.
