Trail Overview

The northern entrance to Trail 8 starts at a bridge crossing from an intersection with Trail 1, then it goes into a dense forest of bigleaf maples, on a narrower shelf trail following the edge of the hillside. It's nice and shaded, starting off fast and flowy, but watch out for log hazards. There are frequent root bands in the trail, some creating bigger obstacles and ledges. It comes up to several tight switchbacks that are challenging to make the turn smoothly, and one has an embedded rock ledge on the inside of the corner. The trail is shelfy and narrow in between the switchbacks as it ascends the hillside. Expect some deep ruts in spots as it keeps climbing south, and a super troughed section dug out a couple of feet below the forest floor. The south end ends on Rock Creek Road.

Access Description

The Rock Creek Trail System is located in the Eldorado National Forest near the town of Georgetown, California. Take Wentworth Springs Road east from the town of Georgetown, and follow the signs for either the Mace Mill Staging Area or the Bald Mountain Staging Area. Both are small and primitive staging areas with space for several vehicles to park and a small trailer turnaround. The third staging area, 5 Corners, is also small and primitive, located by either taking Rock Creek Road or FS 12N72 south of Wentworth Springs Road. The trails are open year-round, but close often during wet conditions, so it is advised to call the Georgetown Ranger District for the status of the trail system: (530) 334-6477. The trails are well-marked and highly maintained, ranging from easy to advanced.
