Trail Overview

Star Lakes Trail (FS 26E203) is a high-altitude scrambler that doesn't hand out its rewards for free. This narrow Jeep track acts as a rugged stairway to the sky, climbing steadily toward a dramatic ridgeline overlooking the Star Lakes basin. The surface is a gritty mix of loose boulders and shifting shale rock, meaning your tires will be constantly searching for grip rather than floating on top. The drive is defined by its technical geometry; you'll face multiple steep climbs with 15 to 20-degree inclines, often complicated by off-camber angles that will test your nerves. It's a tight squeeze where full-size rigs are likely to struggle or sustain body damage in tight tree sections. However, the effort pays off at the summit. Once you crest the ridge, you are treated to spectacular panoramic views, stretching endlessly to the West and offering a dizzying, cliff-edge perspective down to Star Lake in the East. Along the ascent, several dispersed campsites provide scenic spots to break up the climb.

Difficulty

This trail earns a solid Rating 5 due to the combination of loose surface traction and off-camber geometry. The tread is composed of unstable shale and loose boulders, making the 15-20 degree climbs feel significantly harder as tires scramble for purchase. The narrow width leaves little room for line choice, forcing drivers to commit to off-camber sections that can feel precarious. High clearance and 4WD Low are mandatory to manage the loose rock and steep grades without overheating transmissions or losing momentum. It is a technical trail that demands driver focus.
