Trail Overview

Sonny Meadow (FS 5S016) acts as a rugged "sampler platter" of Sierra road conditions, serving as a key access point into the National Forest from the west side. The trail begins with a long, slow climb that winds its way up through the timber, immediately establishing that this isn't your average gravel commute. The tread is having a bit of an identity crisis, offering a little bit of everything: you'll transition between sections of natural dirt, loose gravel, and rocky patches with embedded granite. Perhaps the most distinct feature is the broken pavement--remnants of an older road surface that has since deteriorated into a patchwork of asphalt islands and potholes. This variety keeps the drive engaging as you navigate the changing traction and pick your lines through the forest. It connects explorers to several dispersed campsites, making it a functional and scenic entry route for a weekend adventure.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Rating 2 largely due to the inconsistent and deteriorated nature of the road surface. While there are no extreme technical obstacles like ledges or boulders that require 4WD Low, the broken pavement presents a hazard in the form of deep potholes and sharp edges. Hitting these at speed can damage tires or suspension. Additionally, the occasional ruts and embedded granite sections require drivers to pay attention and choose a smoother line rather than just cruising on autopilot. High clearance is recommended to absorb the bumps and avoid bottoming out in the deeper holes.
