Trail Overview
This scenic trail begins just off Highway 203, near its junction with US-395, making it an easy and accessible route for those arriving in Mammoth Lakes. The surface is a mix of sandy and gravel terrain, with good traction throughout most of the route. There is a lot of geothermal piping, part of the region's renewable energy infrastructure. As you proceed, the trail takes you through a broad open meadow, scattered with sage and wild grasses, before transitioning into a sparse pine forest. Eventually, it becomes more densely wooded just before approaching Shady Rest Park, where the trail concludes. A striking rock formation towers above the road at one point--an ideal visual landmark worth stopping to admire. While dispersed camping is prohibited in this corridor due to increased environmental regulations, there are several developed campgrounds nearby, including government-run and private options within a short distance. This route is ideal for early morning or late afternoon drives when the light enhances the panoramic views of the Eastern Sierra, including peaks like Mammoth Mountain and Mount Morrison.

Difficulty
The route is primarily composed of sand and gravel, with a wide track--generally accommodating 2 to 2.5 vehicles across--making it suitable for beginner drivers or those seeking a mellow scenic drive. There are no technical obstacles, and the terrain remains relatively flat and smooth, with only occasional washboarding. While 4WD is not necessary, a high-clearance vehicle is recommended to avoid minor centerline mounding. The trail can be navigated comfortably in dry conditions by most vehicles with good tires.
