Trail Overview
This wide, well-used trail serves as a convenient and scenic connector between Highway 203 (Main Street) and Highway 395, starting just past Shady Rest Park on the unpaved section of the Sawmill Cutoff. Marked by orange diamonds with the letter "A", this is one of the most heavily trafficked trails in the Mammoth Lakes region, used by a mix of vehicles, hikers, runners, and mountain bikers--so exercise caution and share the trail responsibly. The trail cuts through a beautiful pine forest within the Inyo National Forest, with occasional glimpses of Bald Mountain peeking through the trees. The surface is a blend of gravel and sand, and although the route is generally smooth, there are sections with washboards and light ruts from frequent use. Wildlife sightings are possible here--keep an eye out for deer, hawks, and even black bears in the quieter parts of the forest. Though camping is not permitted for the first two miles, there are spurs farther in that offer dispersed camping opportunities. Numerous side trails branch off this route, offering further exploration and ways to connect with the broader Mammoth trail network. The trail ends at a junction with Highway 395, making it a practical thoroughfare for those looking to transition between major access points while still enjoying the backcountry setting.

Difficulty
This trail is among the easiest in the region and is suitable for most stock high-clearance vehicles. The gravel and sandy surface is generally well-maintained due to regular grading, but some washboards and light ruts may develop between maintenance cycles. The trail is approximately two and a half vehicles across and includes a short shelf road section, but there are no technical challenges, steep grades, or rock obstacles. 4WD is not required, though always recommended for flexibility. Ideal for those seeking an easy cruise through the forest or a base route for exploring nearby spur trails.
