The route climbs 132 feet and drops almost 200 feet in just over 1.66 miles, providing immediate glimpses of the Obsidian Dome through the pine trees as you travel. Obsidian is a shiny, glass-like black rock that was historically used by indigenous people for arrow tips, adding cultural significance to the geological wonder. The trail is over two vehicles wide for most of the route, though coming from the north, it narrows and becomes a shelf road at mile 0.75.
