Trail Overview

Mono Craters East (FS 1N24) is a 4-mile point-to-point trail climbing nearly 1,000 feet. The trail travels through a sparse pine forest and open areas lined with sagebrush and other brush. The surface is sand and pumice, one vehicle wide, with deeper sand sections as you move away from Highway 120. Along the trail, you'll enjoy views of Mono Lake, Crater Mountain, and the Eastern Sierra mountains. There is a large meadow on the south side offering panoramic mountain views. Seasonal fire restrictions are in effect, and dispersed camping is available.

Difficulty

Watch for overgrown branches and brush that may contact your vehicle. The trail has deeper sand sections, occasional ruts, and some off-camber areas. Narrow areas of the pine forest require careful navigation. High clearance is recommended, but 4x4 is not strictly required.

Access Description
