Trail Overview

This Sequoia National Forest route climbs over 1,700 feet in just over 3 miles, creating serious sustained elevation gain. Part of the forest system requires green sticker vehicles to meet certain criteria for legal use. Switchbacks help navigate the steep ascent as the terrain gets higher and rougher with bigger ruts and bigger off-camber sections plunging up to 24 inches deep. The trail narrows on a shelf road that becomes increasingly rocky with altitude. Very tight and narrow spots compress the route, creating claustrophobic passages demanding precision.

Difficulty

That 1,700-foot climb in just over 3 miles means extremely steep sustained grades requiring low range and excellent traction. The bigger ruts and off-camber sections up to 24 inches deep are severe obstacles that will stop many vehicles. Four wheel drive and high clearance transition from recommendation to requirement. The narrow shelf road, getting rockier, creates exposure combined with technical navigation. Those very tight and narrow spots leave zero margin for error. This earns its 5 rating legitimately, suitable only for capable short wheelbase vehicles with experienced drivers and proper clearance.
