Trail Overview

This challenging route cuts through wide open grassy meadows for the first 1.3 miles, then enters an area of large bushes and some trees with a small creek crossing. After 1.5 miles of traversing the big open meadow, the trail climbs almost 300 feet in less than half a mile. This section is full of many loose rocks, with the last push featuring bigger embedded rocks requiring slow but steady progress to the top, where you encounter the most challenging rock garden. The hard work at the end is rewarded with stunning views of Twin Lakes below and 360-degree views of all the surrounding mountain ranges, plus there's a little weather station at the top. Most people don't continue up the last quarter mile, which takes you another 150 feet to the summit. Many mistakenly turn onto an illegal non-motorized trail to the left, and it can be hard to see the real trail because it's less used and slightly overgrown.

Difficulty

This trail earns a moderate difficulty rating due to several challenging features. Less than half a mile in, there are some very deep water runoff ruts and some articulating whoops that require caution but can be maneuvered around. Many other rutted areas exist throughout the route. High clearance is required in some spots, 4x4 is highly recommended, and you should have a recovery plan just in case. The steep climb section with loose rocks and the final challenging rock garden at the top are the primary factors elevating this to a 4 rating.
