Trail Overview

FS 3S118A is a short, sandy trail that runs parallel to Highway 395. This barely one-vehicle-wide path winds through tight tree corridors, occasionally brushing up against branches and sage. It's a quieter alternative to FS 3S118, offering a more mellow way to explore the area while still dipping into some light off-road terrain. The northern section of the trail rides along a shelf, with a series of consistent whoops that make for a bouncy stretch. While the majority of the trail is relatively smooth, dust kicks up quickly--especially when the wind picks up or if another vehicle has recently passed. A few small ruts and mild whoops appear along the way, and logs hidden in the brush near the trail edge can sneak up on you when visibility is low. There are limited dispersed camping opportunities along the route, and a handful of spur trails branch off, though most are simply access routes to and from Highway 395.

Difficulty

It's generally easy and accessible, with a sandy, occasionally rutted surface that remains manageable for most stock high-clearance vehicles. The narrow width and tight tree sections require careful driving to avoid paint scratches. A bumpy northern section with consistent whoops on a mild shelf road adds some character but poses little risk. Be aware of low-lying logs along the trail's edge, which can be obscured by dust. Overall, this is a good introductory route or a gentle bypass option for more challenging nearby trails like FS 3S118.
