Trail Overview

This trail climbs almost 800 feet and drops almost 700 feet over just over 3.4 miles, starting as an out-and-back trail from Old Yosemite Coulterville Road. One spur trail, FS 2S27, cuts through the main route and provides fun exploration opportunities for those interested in additional adventure. Within a quarter mile, the trail presents a significant challenge with very deep ruts reaching up to 18 inches in depth, setting an immediate technical tone for the journey ahead. As the climb progresses, the sandy trail surface mixes with hard rock along longer shelf road sections, creating varied traction conditions. A very steep bypass option exists for those seeking additional challenge and fun, though this bypass is not considered part of the main trail route. The manzanita becomes thicker and more overgrown on the sides as the trail continues, with additional deep ruts encountered throughout the ascent. Pinstripes are inevitable in several sections due to the overgrown vegetation. Just under a mile in, a steep hill features very deep ruts up to 18 inches deep that would be extremely challenging in wet conditions. This technical section rewards drivers with stunning views of hills, forest, and valleys below visible on both sides of the trail. Two additional hill climbs without ruts provide more dramatic scenic rewards. At mile 1.3, the trail begins a steep downhill section with small ruts before passing the spur trail junction. After passing the spur trail, the route mellows out while continuing to offer beautiful views throughout the remaining distance. The final section includes ruts that are difficult to maneuver around, measuring less than 18 inches but presenting challenges for low-clearance vehicles. The very last section involves navigating down one very steep hill and up another, with a turnaround point available before this final challenge for those uncertain about their vehicle's capability on steep terrain.

Difficulty

This trail receives a difficulty rating of 3, indicating easy conditions despite significant technical challenges. The combination of very deep ruts up to 18 inches deep in multiple locations, sandy surfaces mixing with hard rock, shelf road configurations with exposure, steep hill climbs and descents, overgrown manzanita causing inevitable pinstriping, and the challenging final steep hills create substantial obstacles that require careful navigation and adequate ground clearance despite the easy rating classification.
