Trail Overview

This trail begins just east of Bowman Lake at the Jackson Creek Campground. The trail is marked with a few signs and features a large pullout at the starting point. It offers a bumpy, rocky ride with several water bars and small creek crossings, which most stock SUVs can handle, depending on the season. In early spring, the trail tends to retain snow late, and water levels can be higher than in mid-to-late summer when streams are shallow or completely dry. The trail passes by Sawmill Lake, a scenic spot worth exploring. It also leads to several beautiful river spots ideal for swimming or camping. Camping at Faucherie Lake is limited and fills up quickly, so plan accordingly. The area offers many excellent hiking opportunities.

Difficulty

There are a few water bars to cross with some steeper loose gravel spots. Towing a trailer on the switchbacks would not be recommended, and be aware of snow patches and water crossings if you go in the spring.

History

The dam was originally constructed in 1872 and reconstructed in 1964-65 as part of the Yuba-Bear Hydroelectric Project.
