Trail Overview

Chowchilla Mountain Road (FS 5S09) is the legendary "backdoor" into Yosemite National Park that every overland explorer dreams of finding. Starting from Harris Cut Off Road, the trail begins deceptively tame as a well-graded double-track. About two miles in, you'll experience a brief return to civilization with a paved section winding through a small mountain community, before the pavement ends and the real adventure resumes. As you climb back into the Sierra National Forest, the road becomes a consistent dirt track flanked by towering pines and oaks. The route is a steady, relentless climb, gaining over 2,800 feet in elevation, which rewards you with cooling temperatures and peek-a-boo views of the surrounding ranges at the summit. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife; it's not uncommon to see deer crossing right in front of you on this quiet stretch. The trail eventually descends, passing the iconic brown "Entering Yosemite National Park" sign before depositing you onto Wawona Road, just steps away from the historic Wawona Hotel and a convenient gas station.

While this route is largely a wide, graded forest road suitable for most high-clearance vehicles, it earns a Rating 2 due to the potential for surface conditions to change rapidly. The description notes light rock obstacles and washouts, which can occur after storms, given the significant elevation change. The road features steep gradients and can suffer from washboarding or ruts that would be uncomfortable for a standard passenger car.
