Trail Overview
This trail starts just off Highway 120, located 2.7 miles east of the Groveland District Ranger Office, and begins as a 1.5-vehicle-wide gravel trail with some sand sections. Lined with Ponderosa pine trees and bushes, the route provides a pleasant forest driving experience within the Stanislaus National Forest. The trail passes through some private land, requiring respectful behavior and adherence to established routes. Climbing begins immediately, with the trail gaining almost 900 feet and dropping just under 200 feet over less than 3 miles of total distance. Within the first quarter mile, views of surrounding mountain ridges begin to emerge as the elevation increases. The trail follows a ridgeline that sometimes becomes a shelf road, adding scenic exposure and requiring careful attention to vehicle placement. At the half-mile mark, the surface transitions to sand and dirt with less maintenance, creating more ruts but significantly better views as compensation. After the first mile, the trail continues up and down hills with relatively smooth sections interrupted by ruts, occasional potholes, and washboard surfaces. At mile 1.25, a steeper hill climb extends for a longer distance, demanding sustained traction and power. Around mile 1.5, the route leaves the shelf road configuration and travels through an open area with sparse pine trees, changing the character of the landscape. The trail reaches its summit at approximately mile 2.3 at around 3,800 feet elevation before beginning its descent and terminating at Cuneo Road. Dusty conditions persist throughout the journey, particularly during dry periods.
