Trail Overview

The Bodie High Desert Highway is a scenic and relatively easy off-pavement route that traverses the rolling high desert terrain just outside the historic Bodie Ghost Town area. This trail is often used to explore lesser-known mining remnants and access surrounding high desert plateaus with sweeping views and wide-open skies, as well as canyons. There is one water obstacle present, above the one-lane bridge, of unknown depth. (A bypass has been created.)The route itself is mostly easy-going, with long stretches of seemingly graded dirt, mild undulations, and wash, spring, or creek crossings that vary with the season. Some of these crossings can deepen after snowmelt or storms. Due to a wet winter, a creek blocks the route, reclaiming the trail. The trail could be run in its entirety with a larger tire and shorter wheelbase vehicle, though the obstacles in the canyon just South of Del Monte are unknown. Active and historic mining operations are scattered along the trail corridor. While most are abandoned, some private land and claim areas may still be present--so travelers should observe signage and avoid trespassing. Trail Features: Terrain: Graded dirt, occasional shallow water crossings. Difficulty: Easy overall; conditions may change seasonally. Obstacles: None major, but blocked sections due to creeks are commonScenery: High desert plateaus, mining ruins, expansive views. Traffic: Light to moderate near Bodie; sparse deeper into the backcountry. Camping: Limited dispersed sites, best closer to public lands and not near mining sites. Cell Service: Weak to none; offline maps recommended. Bodie High Desert Highway is ideal for exploring the broader Bodie Hills region and connecting with other backroads--just be prepared to turn around, especially if the creek is flowing. It's a mellow adventure with a strong dose of California mining history.

Difficulty

This is a semi-maintained road with little to mild erosion. This trail was run from Bodie Ghost town, and ceased to be mapped in the canyon just South of the area known as "Del Monte." (Please see the map.) In this canyon, the creek becomes the trail, with erosion and rocks making it impassable for the vehicle attempting to map it. The obstacles beyond the one-lane bridge to the exit of the canyon are unknown. Please proceed with caution. The local Bridgeport Forest Station has been notified of the condition of this trail as of June 20, 2025. Check trail reports for updates.
