BLM 137

Trail Overview

This trail starts on BLM 236 and runs east to west, following the large electrical lines for easy reference throughout. The surface is sand and gravel that alternates between hard pack and loose sand, keeping you adjusting your driving approach. You'll encounter lots of ruts and off-camber sections as well as holes to maneuver around, creating constant challenges. The trail cuts in and out of mud hills along the way, and it's a busy trail, so look for other traffic coming from either direction. This is a very bouncy trail with some washboards adding to the jarring ride. The route goes through a wash and then starts heading uphill as it gains elevation. You'll enjoy some views of the Painted Gorge area and the colorful sand hills, providing scenic rewards. The landscape is mostly barren with very little vegetation except for a few bushes and the occasional seasonal wildflowers. The trail ends right near the large power windmills.

Difficulty

The combination of lots of ruts and off-camber sections, holes to maneuver, and alternating between hard pack and loose sand creates technical challenges throughout. The very bouncy trail with washboards will test your suspension constantly. Cutting in and out of mud hills adds navigation complexity. Four wheel drive and high clearance are recommended for the ruts and off-camber sections. The busy traffic means staying alert for oncoming vehicles.
