Trail Overview

There is a 3,000 foot vertical drop at the overlook on this trail. You'll also find some fun side roads through Hack Canyon, as well as great hiking options. Camping is very popular, as the views from the sites are absolutely stunning. Vehicles must be street licensed.

Difficulty

Moderate. Mostly easy with intermittent small ledges. High clearance 4WD recommended. May be impassable when wet. Use caution around blind curves. Hot in summer.

History

Tuweep became part of the Grand Canyon National Monument in 1932. The monument was declared a national park in 1975. Tuweep ranger John Riffey spent 38 years looking after this area. He became omewhat of a local legend with his airplane 'Pogo.' He is buried south of the ranger station.

Access Description

From intersection of Highways 89A and 389 in Fredonia, head west 8.4 miles on Hwy. 389. Watch for parking area on left 0.7 miles after mile marker 25. Trail starts from parking area heading south.
