Trail Overview

FS761A is a short but scenic out-and-back route near Cottonwood, Arizona, totaling about 3 miles. The trail begins with a loose rocky climb made up of stones ranging from softball to basketball size. While not very steep, this section can be difficult for motorbikes and may require 4WD vehicles to crawl steadily rather than charge with speed. After the climb, the route levels out onto a plateau, transitioning into dusty red dirt and narrowing to single-vehicle width. From here, the trail runs along the mountain's edge, offering panoramic views of the red rock cliffs between Cottonwood and Sedona. The trail ends at a gate, where a hiking-only path continues further along the edge of Sugarloaf Mountain. A small turnaround is available, though it may be tight for vehicles with trailers. Dispersed pull-off campsites can be found along the route, and the trail remains generally quiet with little traffic.

Difficulty

The opening rocky climb is the most challenging portion, with loose stone requiring careful tire placement and steady momentum. Once on the plateau, the remainder of the trail is straightforward, narrow in places, but not technical. Most stock 4x4s with reasonable ground clearance will complete it without issue.

History

Remnants of old Native American cliff dwellings can be seen when looking down from certain cliff edges along the trail.
