Trail Overview
Smith & Evans (FR 2) is an absolutely beautiful trail. Wide enough for passing, this rock and dirt trail winds its way through the high prairie and hill country of Northern Arizona. A popular point of entry to the area with hunters, there is a sign-in kiosk at the beginning of the trail where you'll obtain a pass that gets returned on your way out. While the surface is primarily dirt, you'll want to be on the lookout for washouts across the trail in areas that skirt the surrounding hills. On your way, you'll find evidence of local wildlife, such as elk, mule deer, javelina, antelope, crows, quail, falcons, and livestock. Sporadic rock gardens with the occasional sneaky rock might pop up in the trail, as well as mud ruts during the monsoon season or in winter (provided there is or has been snow). There is no cell service on this trail, but have no fear--it seems to be well-traveled, especially during hunting season. The views are amazing with sprawling meadows and high prairies that skirt the surrounding hills.

Difficulty
This is an unmaintained, though well-traveled road. It's wide enough to pass but has shallow water crossings, especially during the rainy season.
