Trail Overview

Sa1024 is a challenging out-and-back trail that connects to Sa1023. The trail begins at the top of a hill on a track wide enough for a full-size vehicle, but conditions quickly become more technical. High clearance 4x4 is required. Expect overgrown vegetation causing underbelly and side pinstriping, along with cattle on the road and other wildlife in the area. This trail appears to be unused for a long time, and the track frequently disappears and reappears--strict map navigation is essential. The trail includes rocky, overgrown roads, washouts, deep ruts, and a major wash crossing that turns into a rock garden. Numerous boulders 18 inches tall or more. A hard left turn to enter the wash and a hard right turn to exit on the opposite side. This section requires proper wheel placement, a spotter, self-recovery equipment, and slow, controlled driving. Follow the mapped route carefully through the obstacle to reach the other side. After this section, you will come to another major trail wash out, taking the bypass is recommended. Trail ends at private property.

Difficulty

This trail is overgrown and difficult to follow, with frequent underbelly and side pinstriping. A wash crossing requires navigating large, rounded rocks up to 18 inches tall, followed by a hard right turn through a rock garden with rocks exceeding 18 inches, where proper wheel placement is critical, and a skilled spotter is strongly recommended. High-clearance four-wheel drive with self-recovery gear is required.

History

These trails were working roads in the late 1800s as wagon routes, livestock paths, and access roads for early settlers, ranchers, and farmers in the Gila River Valley. Now turned forgotten corridors, they were discovered long ago, but are still used quietly.
