Trail Overview

Lost Pines Cutoff is a short but challenging trail in the Coconino National Forest, just off Highway 180. Winding through a peaceful pine forest, this route offers a taste of rugged terrain within a limited stretch, making it a quick but memorable outing for off-roaders. It leads to other trails. The trail is notoriously muddy, especially after recent moisture, and features deep ruts and holes throughout. While many of the worst sections can be bypassed, those who stick to the main line will face more bottomless mud pits and rough terrain that can challenge even experienced drivers. If you take the hard line, prepare for slippery conditions and potential recovery. Unfortunately, this area is seeing signs of restricted use--camping is no longer allowed, and the second half of the trail is currently closed to vehicles, limiting exploration to a shorter out-and-back experience or continuing to other trails. Still, the trail offers a nice slice of forest driving and can be worth the trip for those nearby.

Difficulty

This trail earns a 3 rating if you stick to the main muddy rutted route, due to deep holes and poor traction. If you take the bypasses around the worst sections, it settles in as a solid 2. Either way, high clearance and 4WD are required, especially when wet. Not ideal for beginners, but a fun quick challenge for those with the right rig and recovery gear.
