Trail Overview

FH1001 is an out-and-back trail that begins near private property and runs north toward the Fishhooks Wilderness area. Access to this trail is from FH1028. The road is primarily gravel, with a couple of washouts on the south end that can be navigated around. The landscape features classic Sonoran Desert vegetation, including creosote, young saguaro, and ocotillo, with rock berms lining both sides of the trail. About half a mile in, you'll encounter a large gate and cattle guard. The gate is broken and typically lies on the ground. In dry conditions, the trail is manageable in 2WD with high clearance. There are several campsites along the route, and large lava rocks can be found scattered off the sides of the trail. The trail eventually crosses a wash near a tank and corral area, then begins a gradual climb toward the Fishhooks. High above the canyon, the first overlook provides views of China Peak. After rainfall, this area may feature a seasonal waterfall. At the top of the pass, the trail narrows as it wraps around the hillside. Small side spurs offer additional views of China Peak. As you pass China Peak, views open toward the Fishhooks Wilderness area. More camp rings appear along the route, along with another cattle guard. Vegetation becomes denser and taller as you pass through a ranch area and see the Fishhooks Wilderness information sign. Beyond this point, the trail becomes tighter, transitioning into a narrow dirt shelf road as it climbs parallel to the wilderness boundary. In wet weather, the trail becomes extremely muddy. Stay on the designated route--no motorized use is allowed north of the road. Beautiful mustard-yellow rock formations tower high above the canyon walls. Watch carefully for oncoming traffic, as the shelf section is narrow with steep exposure to the south, the trail becomes rougher and steeper, with increasing rock sizes. 4WD is necessary beyond this point. There is a small creek crossing with a bypass option available. The trail continues over three additional passes before ending at the base of an ATV trail. This is the turnaround point. From here, retrace your route back out the way you came.

Difficulty

The beginning of the trail is an easy, graded road. The road starting at the Fishhooks Wilderness sign becomes rougher as you go. This section is maintained by a bulldozer, which has left the road bumpy with loose rocks.
