Trail Overview
The eastern section of East Willow Springs Road offers a well-manicured two-track trail that winds through vibrant fields of prickly pear, cholla cactus, and yucca plants. As you journey along this route, you'll enjoy stunning views of the backside of Mount Lemmon and the Santa Catalina Mountains to the south, and you will run across the south side of Black Mountain on your north, creating a picturesque desert landscape. Keep an eye out for abundant wildlife; with some luck and keen observation, you may spot roadrunners, red-tailed hawks, and even the occasional javelina or cow sauntering through the area. This is an open-range region, so be sure to leave any gates you encounter precisely as you find them open or closed. Generally, the trail is quite manageable, though there is one section where it drops into a soft and sandy wash; traversing this area may require careful maneuvering, particularly if the sand is deeper. Numerous options for finding nice flat spots for dispersed camping abound, making this trail an excellent choice for an overnight adventure. Keep your eyes peeled for several excellent mountain biking trails in the area. This trail conveniently passes the staging area for the High Point trailhead parking spots, accommodating outdoor enthusiasts heading out for a day of adventure. Important Note: As this trail traverses Arizona State Land Trust territory, ensure you obtain and carry your valid permit before heading out. The trail is rated as a 2 overall, with sections wide enough for two vehicles to pass, while others may narrow significantly. Always prepare adequately with water and supplies, as the desert can present unpredictable challenges. Stay alert to changing conditions, especially if storms are in the forecast!
