Trail Overview

South of Sand Hollow State Park, in the desert under the South Rim, there is a myriad of trails for OHV enthusiasts. This trail connects the Dutchman Draw OHV Area just off of the Sunshine Trail to the Ft Pierce Wash Trail, using BLM trails 2019, 2018, 2021, and 2022. It's nearly 5 miles of desert trails and sandy washes. The trail is primarily dirt, with some areas of sand. To the north, you can see the South Rim of Sand Hollow and the snow-covered Harmony Mountains in the wintertime. To the south, are the East and West Mesas, and to the east are the majestic cliffs of Zion National Park. This area is open year-round as there is very little snow in the valley, and what does come melts quickly. During the peak seasons of Sept - Nov and Feb - April there will be a lot of dirt bikes, quads, SXSs, and other traffic in this area, so use precaution. This trail provides a back way to connect to the Sunshine Trail and the Ft Pierce Wash Trail, so it's a bit less traveled. Beware of rattlesnakes in the spring, summer, and fall. Carry extra fuel as you can travel for miles out here without ever using the same trail twice. Basic recovery equipment is a good idea, including a winch, a tow rope, a saw, and a snatch block. Starting Feb 2023, Utah is going to begin enforcement of their new law, which requires an online education course for all off-roaders. The free course is available online now. Google "Utah OHV Education Course," and the free test will pop up. It's an easy test that will only take 15-30 minutes, and it's required for all off-roaders, Jeeps, SXSs, dirt bikes, and ATVs. Kids under the age of 18 will have to take the Youth Education Test at the same site. After completing the test, print out the certificate to carry with you which shows you completed the course. We have taken it, and it's really no big deal. Good reminders about trail etiquette and trail preservation.

Difficulty

This trail is an easy trail, but if it has rained recently, it will be muddy in some areas. The wash will be running with water if it was a hard rain. After any monsoon or heavy rains, the trail will show signs of erosion, and there may be debris or rocks on the trail.
