Trail Overview
Coyote Peak South is a delightful, shorter desert trail that connects to the Coyote Peak West trail, creating an enjoyable loop for off-road adventurers. This narrow dirt trail meanders alongside the southern edge of Coyote Peak, offering a scenic introduction to the area's rugged beauty. As you travel along Coyote Peak South, you'll find it lined with an abundance of overgrown desert plants, including numerous fields of very tall jumping cacti that can pose a risk for larger vehicles--be cautious to avoid those potential scratches! This trail best suits smaller side-by-side (SXS) vehicles, ATVs, or dirt bikes, ensuring a more enjoyable ride for those navigating the narrower pathway. In addition to the thrill of driving, you'll be rewarded with lovely mountain views and impressive massive saguaro cacti dotting the landscape. The trail features a cattle gate at one end, so remember to leave it as you found it to maintain access for future travelers. You'll also notice plenty of evidence of free-range cattle roaming the area, which adds to the authentic desert experience. The path runs along a fence line for a stretch, but stay alert for a few minor washouts that may require attention as you navigate this route. While dispersed camping opportunities weren't noted on this specific trail, linking it with the Coyote Peak West trail may open up additional campsite options for those looking to extend their stay.Important Note: Ensure you're prepared for desert conditions with sufficient water and supplies, and don't forget to secure your Arizona State Land Trust permit for legal access to the area.
