Trail Overview

Chevy Hill is a very rugged route off of Hackberry. If there has been recent rain, it could make it a challenge. This route is not for the faint of heart, newbies, or vehicles lacking a decent lift and lockers. Incredibly scenic and accessible from Hackberry or Oak Flats campground, it is recommended to access it from Hackberry as you will mostly be climbing the obstacles. Chevy Hill is named for the dead old Chevy truck that perhaps could not make it. There is a bypass here, which is shown by my XJ routing around the Chevy. However, there is also a very high wall with stages. This will take the run from a solid 7 to an 8+. It is recommended if you plan to climb the face, as the person in the pictures did. Put a vehicle at the top and be ready to run a winch to the car coming up. As the cars slide, there is a risk of tipping to the driver's side and rolling. Therefore, if needed, the winch line requires 2 to 3 inches of pull, and your back tires are approaching the slipping/tipping point. Knowing this can make a harrowing event just a fun obstacle.

Difficulty

Chevy Hill is a very rugged route off of Hackberry. It consists mostly of Rock/boulder trails with a few water crossings, V-notches, off-camber obstacles, and one multi-staged wall on Chevy Hill proper. There are also other non-charted obstacles. Some of the trails offer some very deceptive lines, which can result in rolling your vehicle. This is not for the inexperienced, and do not take this route alone for you are likely not to see anyone for days.

History

I have heard many 'stories' about this trail. However, most of these trails are remnants of past mining and some utility lines.

Access Description

There are two ways to get there: either take the Lower Hackberry Trail, which is a long day, or take Highway 60 to Oak Flat Campground to stage and drive an additional 1/3 of a mile on pavement to FR315, the entrance to the Chevy Hill Trail.
